The structure of the Judiciary of Texas is highly complex, featuring five layers of courts, numerous instances of overlapping jurisdiction. The municipal courts are the most active courts, with the county and district courts handling most other cases and often, as in Collin County, share the same buildings.

Collin County has 9 different district courts. The district court has exclusive jurisdiction on felony cases. The county court has exclusive jurisdiction over "Class A" and "Class B" misdemeanors (these offenses can involve jail time).Municipal courts in Texas come into contact with more defendants than all other Texas courts combined. The subject matter of municipal courts relates to crimes relating to public safety and quality of life issues. In recent years, municipal courts and justice court in Texas have become the primary venue for acts of misconduct committed by children.

Each court has its own rules, processes, and practices, which is why having an attorney who knows the local judges and customs is so important. As an attorney who has spent the majority of my career in Collin County and the surrounding area, I am able to effectively navigate courts in a way not many attorneys can.
